COLUMBUS — Middle West Spirits here won six medals, including a Best of Category gold, at the recent 2018 American Distilling Institute Judging of Craft Spirits.
Middle West’s OYO Sherry-Finished Bourbon was voted the Best of Category winner for bourbons and a gold medal winner. The distillery’s OYO Dark Pumpernickel Rye also won a gold medal.
“The entire craft industry is fixated on the meteoric growth of the whiskey market,” said Brady Konya, Middle West co-owner and general manager. “To take home top honors in the bourbon category is humbling to say the least.”
Middle West won a silver medal for OYO Vodka in the Grain-to-Glass Vodka – Residual Base Character category, and bronze medals for OYO Bourbon Whiskey Michelone Reserve, OYO Oloroso Wheat Whiskey and OYO Stone Fruit Vodka in the flavored vodka category.
The 12th annual ADI Judging of Craft Spirits was held in March with award winners announced at the trade group’s recent national conference in Portland, Ore. Billed as the largest judging devoted to craft spirits in the United States, the competition featured a panel of 40 judges comprising master distillers, journalists, bar owners, bartenders, retailers, wholesalers, distributors and importers.
The judging’s 2018 Bubble Cap Award for Distillery of the Year went to Copperworks Distilling Co. of Seattle, while Sourland Mountain Spirits in Hopewell, N.J., was awarded the Farm Distillery Award and Lost Spirits Distillery of Los Angeles was named Best Distillery Visitor Experience. In addition, Hubert Germain-Robin received the ADI’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
